Mission San Jose is one of the 5 missions that are located in San Antonio, Texas. They were founded by the Spanish Missionaries in the late 18th century. While the Alamo is the most famous of the missions, Mission San José y San Miguel de Aguayo is known as the "Queen of the Missions" and is the most impressive.
As you walk in through the outer walls into the very large courtyard of the Mission, it is easy to imagine stepping back into history. The wide open spaces give a clear idea of what it would be like when these missions were first established in Texas. Mission San Jose has maintained it's openness and history well. The Blackland Prairie natural region predominates here. It can be described as oak savannah, where patches of oak woodland are interspersed with grassland. Typical vegetation is pecan, post oak, live oak, Texas persimmon, sugarberry (hackberry), and buttonbrush.
There are benches all around the courtyard under the mesquite trees...
