According to the Balboa Park information brochure, the San Diego Museum of Art (SDMA) is "the county's largest and most visited art museum." While it can't compare to the museums in Los Angeles (such as the Getty Center), it's still worth a visit if you're a fan of museums and find yourself at 1El Prado in Balboa Park, San Diego, california.
You'll find many famous names here, Dali, Goya, Rembrandt, Giorgione, Canova, Miro, Bouguereau, Murillo, - they've even a work by Giotto. All are fine works. One thing I appreciated (and which rather surprised me, given the museum's situation in family-destination Balboa Park) was the absence of velvet ropes or Plexiglas shields. You keep your hands behind your back, and you are welcome to stick your nose right up to the brushstrokes of William-Adolphe Bouguereau and count them individually.
Beautiful architecture on the outside and on the inside. The dominant feature of the facade is a heavily ornamented door inspired by a doorway at the University of Salamanca. The Cathedral of Valladolid also influenced the museum's exterior design. And there's always something interesting going on in San Diego's Museum of Art (SDMA). Don't miss it.
