San Fernando De Béxar Cathedral is not only beautiful and sacred but also historical.
The site for the Church of San Fernando was selected on July 2, 1731, when Juan Antonio Pérez de Almazán, captain of the Presidio of San Antonio, laid out a central square for the villa of San Fernando de Bexar, as San Antonio was then called. The original San Fernando Church was constructed between 1738 and 1749. The walls of this church now form the San Fernando Cathedral’s sanctuary. The dome of the original church was the point from which all mileage in Texas was measured in the 1700s.
The San Fernando Cathedral is well-maintained, and mass still goes on daily. Inside the church there are many beautiful points of interest, for example, the gold gilded alter, intricate stained glass windows and dramatic columns and archways.
