Sensoji (also known as Asakusa Kannon Temple) is a Buddhist temple located in Asakusa, Taito, Tokyo, Japan. It was built for the goddess of Kannon, the Buddhist Goddess of Mercy, and is the oldest Buddhist temple in Tokyo with the five-storied pagoda standing near.
Near are also thousands of lanterns. Ever since a Korean Buddhist monk brought the idea of the lamp and Buddhism from China the Japanese paper lantern is a cultural icon. Starting with use in temples and marking holy grounds, the paper lantern became a household utility, surpassed only by employment of enterprising inn and shop keepers to advertise room vacancies and food items. There is no guessing what\\\'s on the menu with the lanterns spelling it out.
